Time of day: 9:00 – 12:00 p.m.

Position description

The Centre for Continuing Education at Concordia University provides part-time employment to a range of subject-matter experts to teach in short-target courses and programs. Teaching tasks include the preparation of course and course plan, delivery of course, evaluating student performance and grading student work and grade submission. Instructors attend departmental meetings and attend professional development training activities related to the program.

Course description and learning outcomes

In this course, students will be learning the foundational understanding of basic accounting principles and statements, considering the role of accounting information as it relates to decision-making. Students develop competencies in journal entry processing and in the preparation and interpretation of income statements, balance sheets, and statements of changes in owners’ equity.


The objectives of CEBU 1170 Business Accounting are to introduce students to: the role of financial accounting in business, current accounting procedures, transaction analysis, and the creation and use of financial statements. Students will be provided with an overview of the manner in which financial accounting information is employed.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • analyze business transactions;
  • record financial transactions employing journal entries;
  • prepare adjusting and closing entries;

prepare financial statements and bank reconciliations

Qualifications and assets

  • Education with accounting designation (CA, CPA, CMA, CGA) or MBA, MSc, or equivalent
  • Five years of professional, relevant and recent financial accounting, where at least three years of experience was accumulated at a recognized medium- or large-sized enterprise, or equivalent
  • Three years of relevant teaching experience, or equivalent
  • Experience in the competency-based approach to teaching and learning
  • Note: this is a coordinated course. The coordinator will be selecting the pedagogical materials to be used.
