The Calgary Zoo is seeking a full-time permanent* Zoo Ready Technician* to join our dedicated grounds maintenance team. Zoo Ready Technicians are responsible for carrying out all duties required to get the zoo ready for guests and staff with a focus on overall zoo cleanliness and safety. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the setup of ZOOLIGHTS.

        What you will do:

        • Assists in setting up and dismantling of all necessary equipment and supplies for special events in a timely, efficient and safe manner
        • Performs duties associated with the daily ‘Zoo Ready’ preparation of the zoo including but not limited to power washing garbage containers, picnic tables and benches, the orderly re-organization of same, removal of various items from events or public activities and other duties as required to prepare the zoo for daily opening
        • Sets up and dismantles stages and tents for events and ensure all setups are in accordance with event contracts and customer needs and expectations
        • Actively participates in the assembly and disassembly of the annual ZOOLIGHTS event and may include providing direction to seasonal laborers
        • Repairs and maintains all ZOOLIGHTS figures and equipment including the organization of Zoo Ready storage areas
        • May be required to operate small and large equipment in order to effectively carry out duties
        • Assists trades as required
        • Assists in grounds work and snow removal as required
        • Other duties as assigned
        • Additional training that may be required and provided by the Zoo includes, WHIMIS, workforce orientation, zoonotic disease awareness, vehicle operator training, respiratory protection, pest control, lock out/tag out, hazard assessment & control, fire extinguisher use, Boom Lift Training, SkidSteer Training, Code Adam, First Aid, boom lift and Fall Protection.

        What you will bring:

        • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required
        • 1 to 3 years experience as a general labourer
        • Class 5 Driver’s License Required
        • Knowledge of color and symmetry, a solid work ethic, and an understanding of electrical systems are definite assets
        • Must have good communication and organizational skills
        • Experience in the set up and tear down of all types of events is an asset
        • Experience working outside and at heights
        • Experience in preparing large campuses for visitors and staff with a focus on aesthetics and safety

        Working Conditions:

        • Operation of small and large equipment, such as gators and man lifts
        • Adverse weather conditions including hot and cold
        • Pungent odors from animal habitats
        • Physical demands (heavy lifting, walking, etc.)
        • Confined spaces
        • Working near animals and zoo visitors

        Calgary Zoo employees and volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in accordance with the Calgary Zoo’s COVID 19: Vaccination Policy.
        The Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
