    The incumbent is a member of a team of Networking Technical Support Specialists within the IDEAWORKS MEDIC applied research department.

    This position provides front-line technical support and assistance to MEDIC focused computer clients (client refers to the students, academic staff, support staff, and administrative staff) and acts as a technical resource for MEDIC and IDEAWORKS employees.

    The position also encompasses assisting the Network Engineering System Specialist with implementation and support of the MEDIC network infrastructure as a secondary role.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

    Problem Determination and Resolution

    • Responds to and resolves MEDIC IT support requests which includes assisting MEDIC staff with computer and network usage problems, offering technical direction, instructions, and advice where possible to resolve the issues.
    • Diagnose hardware or software problems on computer workstations and peripherals and resolve issues.
    • Ensure the network and infrastructure are as efficient as possible and fix any problems or bugs that have been identified.
    • Inspect system failures to identify the problem and highlight any bottlenecks that could slow down the network.
    • Prepare, submit documentation, and works with external vendors to coordinate troubleshooting and resolution of vendor specific hardware and software problems.
    • Working with non-IT staff to coordinate problem resolution and to keep people informed of the status of problems and down time.
    • Monitoring alerts from MEDIC devices and monitoring equipment. Correcting reported problems using approved techniques that minimize impact to clients of the college network.
    • Triaging issues remotely, escalating to the Network Engineering System Specialist, and if directed, report to the MEDIC lab if issues occur outside working hours.
    • Maintain and/or update any departmental service IT work item documentation.

    Setup and configuration of computer workstation networking, user support

    • Provisions MEDIC equipment for use by MEDIC personnel, students, partners, and other IDEAWORKS departments.
    • Physically installs, sets up and secures computer workstations in labs and employees offices.
    • Installs components, loads software images, performs local software installations, connects, and tests peripherals, performs required troubleshooting.
    • Tests, installs, and configures software on MEDIC support staff and administrative workstations.
    • Ensure physical protection for network and data communications equipment is in place.
    • Provides telephone support to MEDIC staff and clients.
    • Works to resolve problems relating to the access, configuration or proper operation of computer hardware, software, and portable telecommunications devices.
    • Liaising with Mohawk IT to coordinate services for MEDIC/IDEAWORKS personnel, guest Wi-fi services, and other services only available through college IT.
    • Assist with training to MEDIC personnel and external partners.
    • Assisting and providing guidance with co-op networking students with assigned tasks.

    Maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, and documentation of network infrastructure and equipment within the applied research MEDIC IT department

    • Monitor and maintenance of MEDIC servers, storage arrays, backup strategies and processes. Configure network hardware, software, and resources to address usage needs and assure system stability, security, and maximum uptime.
    • Performing network duties (upgrades, installation, testing, monitoring, and tuning of network infrastructure, devices, and software) as directed by the Network System Engineering Specialist.
    • Monitoring and maintenance of active directory and remote access to domains, domain resources, and virtual machines as required by MEDIC infrastructure and projects.
    • Monitoring and maintenance of network traffic including connectivity and security software. Log, troubleshoot, and resolve errors in the network and security threats as directed by the Network System Engineering Specialist.
    • Assist Network Engineering System Specialist with firewall planning and provisioning.
    • Assist the Network Engineering Specialist with maintaining an inventory of MEDIC equipment (includes ordering of new equipment, upgrading, repairs (where applicable), disposal, and coordinating with outside technical support for repair/replacement of equipment under warranty).
    • Maintain documentation regarding network configuration, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.

    Other duties as assigned


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    The successful applicant must have:

    • A minimum of 3-year post-secondary education in Information Technology, Computer Network Engineering, Computer Systems Technology, or related field of study; or equivalent combination of education.
    • One year in the Information Technology field with direct experience in networking. Co-operative education experience may be considered as an alternative.
    • Exceptional communication skills and attention to detail; superior time management and organization skills.
    • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
