We’re looking for a Director, Software Development to help us build and manage high-performance teams that will solve challenging engineering problems as we build the next generation of social products. You will hire, grow, coach, and lead managers, leads, and staff developers who will build, scale, monitor, and optimize backend infrastructure and core client-facing web applications used daily by all Hootsuite users. You will work remotely in the Canadian geography, and will report to the Director, Software Development of Product Infrastructure.

What you will do:

  • Partner with product & design partners to build a vision, strategy and data-driven objectives for the strategically important portfolio
  • Hire, coach, and manage leads, managers and teams of software developers, of a large team of direct and indirect reports, crossing multiple functional domains including the strategically important Billing portfolio and legacy platform services.
  • Oversee, manage, coach and mentor Hootsuite’s tier 3 Customer Support team, and oversee the bug escalation process, including prioritization, reporting and stakeholder communication
  • Hire, liaise, manage and report on teams and groups of external software vendors.
  • Define and deliver well-scoped programs of work that achieve results, while communicating risks, trade-offs, and timelines with stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain high standards of security, reliability, scalability, performance, and quality in all delivered projects
  • Proactively share information, actively solicit feedback, and facilitate communication for multiple stakeholders, in multiple geographies
  • Challenge the status quo and effect positive organizational both within the team(s) you manage, but also more broadly, outside of mandated work

What you will need:

  • Previous experience as a software development manager, including a number of years at a senior level, with a demonstrated increase in responsibility, including people leadership
  • Proven experience in a technical support leadership role
  • Significant software development experience
  • Highly experienced working with and managing teams of external software vendors
  • Alignment with Hootsuite’s leadership principles and development core values, i.e. You are a producer of talent, not a consumer, You are a teacher and a learner, You build a performance culture through challenge and support
  • Experience with Microservices and Service Oriented Architecture
  • Experience managing in the following areas is highly desirable: Billing systems, backend platform services, tier 3 support teams
  • Knowledge of some or all of the following technologies is highly desirable: interpreted (PHP, Python), compiled (Scala, Go) languages, relational and NoSQL databases, Javascript and UI development, specifically with React, Angular, Ionic or other JS frameworks and experience building REST APIs
