If this describes you, review the opportunity we have for a permanent full-time Lead Hand Operator and take the first step toward joining our team. You will be based out of their French Creek Utility on Vancouver Island. The French Creek Utility is regulated and has a Class II Water Treatment Facility and a Class III Water Distribution system.

As a Lead Hand Operator, you possess highly developed leadership skills and are a team-oriented, self-motivated individual. Your exceptional interpersonal skills enable you to build rapport quickly with others, create a positive influence, motivate team members, and ensure the safe and efficient operations of the plant. Reporting to the Site Manager, you will ensure results through the supervision, coordination and execution of operations by overseeing and undertaking the work of staff, equipment operators and sub-contractors.

What you’d be responsible for

In the Lead Hand Operator role, you are accountable to the Site Manager. Main accountabilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring compliance with British Columbia legislation as it relates to water treatment facilities and distribution systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with performance and reporting requirements
  • Supervising, coaching and ensuring optimal performance of operating staff.
  • Assisting in the delivering of training for new and existing Operators.
  • Planning and coordinating operating, maintenance and capital work activities.
  • Customer, stakeholder and regulatory contact and reporting as required.
  • Participating in the operations’ on-call rotation.
  • Assisting with site operations and maintenance tasks as required.
  • Troubleshooting day-to-day operational issues and developing solutions to rectify these issues.
  • Coordinating daily /weekly safety briefing/discussion and overseeing site HSE permit program.

What’s required to be successful

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Grade 12 diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
  • Completion of a 2-year technical program specializing in Water and Wastewater Treatment or equivalent.
  • Minimum of Level II certification in Water Treatment and a minimum Level III certification in Water Distribution.
    • Individuals possessing less than these levels of certification will not be considered.
  • At least 5 years of directly related experience as an Operator in water and/or wastewater fields.
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • A proven willingness to maintain and upgrade certifications.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and an affinity to learn other software systems as required.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills combined with the ability to apply knowledge and problem-solving skills to respond to issues in a timely manner.
  • The ability to collect, understand, manipulate and report data are critical to this position. Writing skills are essential.
  • Communication skills including verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships with internal parties and external customers as well as other stakeholders.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License with 6 demerits or less.
    • Ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver’s permit.
    • A 5 year Commercial Driver Abstract will be required upon hire.

Additionally these are valuable assets to have:

  • Previous experience and a proven ability to use workflow platforms such as IVARA for asset management/equipment maintenance work orders.
  • Working familiarity with the use of Claros WIMS Water Information Management application.

Your customer service orientation is accompanied with highly developed verbal and written communication skills, keen attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. You are a person that can work effectively within a team dynamic or with minimal supervision, as the situation requires.

Other important facts about this job

This position is located in French Creek, near Parksville, BC, and the successful candidate will be required to live within a thirty-minute radius of the French Creek site. Participation in the housing allowance may be available and for candidates that are not currently a resident of this area relocation support may be provided.

Wage: starting at $48.08
**Final wage will be determined at the time of hire on a matrix scale recognizing Certification levels and directly related experience.

Hours of work: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.
**Overtime and weekend work may be required.
** Participation in the on-call rotation system.
** Able to respond within the 30-minute response time as per EPCOR and Regulatory requirements.
