About the role:


What you need to know: We are seeking an ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL who will work in the Legal Department and will be responsible for assisting the General Counsel with corporate/commercial work, governance matters, legal advice relating to AIG’s Bermuda operations, support of excess casualty and financial lines underwriters worldwide, and special projects arising from various corporate initiatives within AIG and its affiliates. The Assistant General Counsel will become an integral part of the Legal team, and will:


  • Advise generally on Bermuda legal, regulatory and compliance matters
  • Assist the General Counsel with the implementation of effective governance and controls in Bermuda in support of AIG-Bermuda strategies
  • Contract review and drafting
  • Attend Board and/or Shareholder meetings of AIG’s Bermuda-based companies
  • Assist with and monitor various restructuring initiatives involving Bermuda-registered entities
  • Assist internal clients and stakeholders navigate regulatory issues and advise on Bermuda insurance regulatory reporting requirements
  • Communicate with and/or coordinate the communication with regulators within and outside Bermuda as directed by the General Counsel
  • Manage the due diligence processes arising from the various AIG-driven initiatives
  • Where required, procure advice or opinions on specific jurisdictional legal matters
  • Assist with dispute resolution matters
  • Work with the Compliance Department to develop applicable policies and procedures to comply with Bermuda statutory requirements
  • Participate in servicing legal needs of Bermuda-based casualty and financial lines underwriting businesses, including contract wording review, legal review of certain claims and related advice
  • Prepare reports for senior management
  • Provide assistance and oversight of applicable corporate secretarial work
  • Collaborate with AIG functional groups and affiliated legal staff as needed
  • Perform any other related duties and ad hoc projects as required


What we’re looking for:

  • Must be a member in good standing of the Bar of any of the following: Bermuda, England & Wales, British Commonwealth
  • Minimum of eight years (post qualified) corporate legal experience with a recognized law firm or as internal counsel
  • Must have a minimum of three years’ recent experience working in or advising the insurance industry
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills
  • Self-motivated with ability to work effectively and independently without direct supervision
